ペリカン倉庫棟
食パンとロールパンだけを作り続けてきた老舗パン店のための倉庫棟である。店舗ビルに隣接する角地が空き、敷地を広げられることになったことから、この計画は始まった。1階に店舗と工場を持つ既存ビルは老朽化しているが、耐震改修を終えたばかりで、すぐに建替えの必要はない。そこで将来の更新を視野に入れながら、まずは隣地に原料や梱包資材を収める平屋の倉庫を建て、既存ビルと連携して日々の仕事を効率化することになった。
毎朝から昼にかけて、多くの人がパンを求めて交差点に沿って並ぶ。この倉庫は一時的な存在ではあるが、交差点に面して立つことで店舗の顔の一部となり、人々の行列を受け止める背景となる。限られた期間であることを弱点とせず、むしろその前後をつなぐ時間の橋渡しと考え、この街角に控えめでありながら凛とした風景をつくることを目指した。
外周は、特殊な乾式注入防腐・防蟻処理（AZN）を施し、シリコン系木材保護塗料で染色した24mm厚の合板で覆っている。住友林業と兼松サステックが共同開発したこの技術により、これまで屋外での使用が難しかった合板を外装に用いることが可能となった。飾らず変わらない食パンとロールパンを作り続けてきた店の姿勢に呼応するように、素材もまた素朴なヒノキ材の合板を選んでいる。10年ほどの期間を前提とした建築ではあるが、これほどの規模で合板を外装の主役とした例は稀であり、とくに都心ではほとんど見られない。その木目と風合いが、80年以上にわたり地域に根ざしてきたパン店の新しい顔となり、訪れる人びとに寄り添って時を刻んでいくことを願っている。

This project is a warehouse facility for a long-established bakery that has specialized exclusively in producing white bread and rolls. The opportunity arose when a corner lot adjacent to the existing shop building became available, enabling an expansion of the premises. The existing structure, which contains both the retail area and bakery on the ground floor, is aging but has recently undergone seismic retrofitting and therefore does not require immediate replacement. With long-term renewal in view, the first step was to construct a single-story warehouse on the neighboring site to accommodate raw ingredients and packaging materials, thereby improving the efficiency of daily operations in coordination with the existing building.
From early morning until midday, customers queue along the intersection in front of the shop. Although conceived as a provisional facility, the warehouse inevitably forms part of the bakery’s public frontage, acting as a backdrop to the daily line of customers. Rather than regarding its limited time horizon as a drawback, the design positions the building as a temporal bridge between the present and the future, aiming to establish a restrained yet dignified presence at the street corner.
The exterior is clad with 24-mm plywood panels treated with AZN, a specialized dry-injection preservative and anti-termite process, and finished with a silicone-based protective stain. This technology, jointly developed by Sumitomo Forestry and Kanematsu Sustec, makes it possible to employ plywood as an exterior cladding material, a use traditionally considered impractical. In resonance with the bakery’s consistent production of unadorned white bread and rolls, plain cypress plywood was selected to convey an equally unpretentious character. While the building is planned with a notional lifespan of about ten years, with proper maintenance it could last far longer. Even so, examples of plywood used as the principal exterior finish at this scale are rare, particularly in dense urban contexts. Its grain and material presence are intended to articulate a new face for the bakery, which has been embedded in the community for over eighty years, while providing an enduring architectural expression that frames everyday life.
